INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND

The digitization of biological data for scientific research has been largely produced and made public through specialists in the field of Bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary science that uses skills of computer science, molecular biology, mathematics, and various other fields of study for the purpose of solving biological problems through computational methodology. Bioinformaticians specialize in collecting, managing, analyzing, and interpreting organized data for practical applications such as drug repurposing, predictive molecular modeling, genome mapping, and protein structure/functionality associations. The culmination of a bioinformaticians’ effort’s usually becomes a part of a database, in which creates web-based libraries entirely focused on selected biological data for better categorization and utilization.

The creation of databases in which encapsulate distinct biological qualities is an invaluable piece of modern science which has greatly benefited humanity. Organizations such as NCBI, Ensembl, and Uniport, with the use of bioinformatics techniques, have conglomerated some of the largest digital libraries in the world for use by the public. Information on such databases such as disease-related SNPs, protein pathways, and conserved domains have been especially vital to studies for improving overall human health in the current decades. The sheer utility of such databases have made the ability to navigate and use them an integral skill for any scientist in the current days. For that reason, practice of bioinformatics methodology has become helpful for any science graduate and undergraduate students in their studies.  (2) (3)

Advancements in a field such as bioinformatics are essential for getting a better understanding of the intricate components of nature and different lifeforms. Having newly discovered or understood information stored in online databases allows people to first and foremost learn about accessible material and gives people the opportunity to build upon that previous knowledge through different applications. In particular, this project gives students the opportunity to get a better understanding about a particular gene and the protein that it encodes by analyzing their components using sophisticated bioinformatics databases and tools. With given only a partial amino acid sequence for a specific protein, the goal of this project is to use bioinformatic resources in order to identify and research on the protein and its gene. Moreover, methods and strategies learned in the Cell Molecular Biology course aided in completing the goal of this project.

With the world currently undergoing the Coronavirus pandemic, many scientific questions have been raised in understanding the root of the problem and for finding the best, safest solutions. The bioinformatics databases that are available now and that are still being updated with new information, serve to give people answers to those scientific questions. Not only with the Coronavirus, but bioinformatics resources have helped to provide information to the public at different levels on various diseases and on other scientific areas. Thus by completing a project such as this, a person can gain awareness on the vastness of scientific knowledge. This project gives a glimpse of the power that bioinformatics has in shaping and helping the world!
